Grant Writer Request #08302021A

Primary Purpose:
To providing our services to NYC DOE public school students.
Programming and Dollar Needs:
Our organization provides educational management, special education, and general education services to public and private schools. Our catchment area includes New York City and the greater Metropolitan area. We serve students from 2.9 months to 18 years of age, and we have done so for the past six-and-a-half years. Our participants experience a comprehensive, research-based literacy curriculum that addresses cognition, motor, and language content. We have an established methodology of working in school resource rooms, using well-trained, highly qualified educators to deliver remedial instruction in reading, ELA, and mathematics. Support is provided to students in small group settings and a one-to-one fashion. Since our inception, we have been selected by nonpublic schools that are looking for innovative, yet research-based strategies for improving the numeracy and literacy skills of struggling, under-performing students.

We bring a unique perspective, innovative curriculum, and proven teaching techniques capable of meeting every child's educational and developmental needs, regardless of their background. We offer high-quality ABA (applied behavior analysis) therapy to preschoolers as well as school-age children. Our Board Certified Behavior Analysts work with families to implement behavior plans and create functional opportunities for children with social-emotional deficits. As a result of working in resource rooms in scores of schools across New York City, we have the skill sets required to reach general education students, emerging multi-language learners (EMLLs), and students with disabilities (SWDs). We specialize in serving the latter population, with the ability to deliver on-site assessments and work closely with parents and the CPSE to best serve children that have been determined to have developmental delays and disabilities.

We take a unique approach to educating all students (general education and those with special needs) to ensure that each child can achieve and succeed. Our therapists, lead teachers, and assistant teachers partner with school resource rooms (working with eligible children by remediating academic and social teachings) in classroom settings and on a one-to-one basis. Applying a unique approach of individualized methods of teaching math, reading, and writing, etc., our staff utilizes research-based practices in the mainstream setting of the classroom. Those strategies include the Orton-Gillingham method (a language-based multi-sensory, structured and sequential approach to combat difficulty in reading, spelling, and writing); Lindamood Bell (LiPS™) approach (a sensory-cognitive approach toward teaching reading); Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) paradigm (the process of systematically applying interventions based on the principles of the learning theory); and the ILAUGH model of Social Thinking (based on the methodologies of Michelle Garcia Winner, who is the founder of social thinking). ILAUGH is an acronym which breaks down as follows: I = Initiation of Language; L= Listening with Eyes and Brain; A = Abstract and Inferential Language/Communication; U = Understanding Perspective; G=Gestalt Processing/Getting the Big Picture; and, H= Humor and Human Relatedness.
