Here are a few tips to to keep in mind when working on a grant application.<\/p>\n

  1. Accuracy<\/strong>. Funding sources specify their requirements:\u00a0what materials they want, how they want them, what information they need and when. Follow those instructions to the letter. If not, your application will wind up in the virtual circular file.<\/li>\n
  2. More accuracy<\/strong>. Make sure that spelling, punctuation, and all information regarding your proposal is 100% correct. Your proposal reflects your general attitude towards your work.<\/li>\n
  3. Start early<\/strong>. Organize\u00a0your thoughts to define the project. \u00a0Leave enough time to perfect the application and increase your\u00a0odds of success. Deadline stress does not produce top-quality work.<\/li>\n
  4. Get a second eye<\/strong>. Or even better, a third or a fourth pair of eyes. Outside perspectives can provide valuable critiques of style, presentation, and will identify errors\u00a0that a person close to the work may have missed.<\/li>\n
  5. Avoid technical gobbledygook. <\/strong>Remember that the people or Board of Directors reviewing your application will be reading many proposals. \u00a0You want them to find your statistics interesting, accurate, from reliable sources\u00a0and relevant to the topic.<\/li>\n
  6. Keep it clear, concise and honest. <\/strong>Don\u2019t waste time and space repeating and repeating with\u00a0blah, blah and more blah. Don\u2019t present your organization as more accomplished than it is. Speak about your real successes.<\/li>\n
  7. Research the Foundation<\/strong>. Understanding the funding sources’\u00a0mission, preferences and who they recently funded\u00a0will help you speak their language.<\/li>\n
  8. Network<\/strong>. Find someone who knows someone who knows someone who can mention your organization\u2019s name to the Board. Of course, the fewer degrees of separation, the better. \u00a0Invite the individual to see your program first hand.\u00a0Do not ever do this wirh a government fundied\u00a0grant that prohibits lobbying!<\/li>\n
  9. Include your staff in the process<\/strong>. Your staff will contibute to the content with current\u00a0up-to-date information, recent testimonials, and most likely have some budgetary and programmatic suggestions.<\/li>\n
  10. Consider investing in yourself<\/strong>. Build your skills with books, courses, consult\u00a0with experienced grant writers, and utilize online resources.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n
