Primary Purpose:
Our museum is a Hurricane Katrina Resource center. The visitors, supporters, and ongoing contacts of our museum includes local residents, tourists from several states, advisors to the mayor, members of the city council, a Louisiana senator, nationally recognized public figures, a foreign embassy, and thousands of Internet surfers who visit our website.
Our greatest museum artifact is the Katrina List, which is a spreadsheet of approximately 10,000 names with contact information collected by the museum’s founder in New Orleans during and after the evacuation for Hurricane Katrina. Every person who was a resident of New Orleans in August 2005 had some association with someone on the Katrina List. Visitors to the museum, express a wide variety of emotions when searching the list for familiar names. All express amazement about this remarkable snap of history. The Katrina List, hundreds of photographs, and documents that were found are comprised and an unparalleled record of Hurricane Katrina requires preservation.
Programming and Dollar Needs:
The museum proposes to increase awareness. Every New Orleans resident knows somebody among approximately 10,000 names on the Katrina List in our museum. For this reason, every New Orleans citizen should know that the list exists. Some of those names are of victims who never lived to tell their families that they gave contact information to the museum founder. The museum also has pictures and videos of Katrina victims who were unable to evacuate the city. The purpose of this project is to engage students and other New Orleans residents in educational experiences and information exchange about Hurricane Katrina victims, in particular, and about hurricane preparedness in general. This is a Proof of Concept project to demonstrate the feasibility of creating a centralized information resource on our website for New Orleans residents to access during hurricane evacuations.

Funding is needed to research the 10,000 names on the "KATRINA LIST". The United States Government ordered the State of Louisiana to stop counting the remains in early September 2005 at 1.836, however, there is over 10,000 dead and or missing.

The project has three parts. Part 1: Natural Disaster Preparedness Education: Distribute lesson plans to New Orleans secondary schools; collect structured feedback from school administrators about including their schools on a hurricane evacuation contact list for centralized information exchange.
Part 2: Museum Exhibit Preservation: Distribute informational DVD files to New Orleans residents; collect email addresses of residents to create a hurricane evacuation contact list for centralized information exchange.
Part 3: Computerized Museum Catalog: Distribute informational brochures to Louisiana university administrators; collect email addresses from university administrators about including their universities on a hurricane evacuation contact list for centralized information exchange. The need for centralized disaster relief communication was tragically absent during Hurricane Katrina. Today, the Internet is replete personal information exchange outlets through social networks such as Facebook, Linkedin, Myspace, and Twitter. Wikipedia lists 198 social networking websites in America.
Project Description:

We have an agency mission statement: Our mission is to build a national museum in New Orleans, Louisiana to provide a place to honor those who perished in Hurricane Katrina, remember and learn from the catastrophe, and celebrate the strength of the survivors and those who came to help rebuild. In creating this international destination we will establish a system of apprenticeship and mentoring for the youth of New Orleans in the building and landscape trades while using cutting-edge "green" technologies.
