Grant Writer Request #10132020D

Primary Purpose:
We seek funds to support software development for our free and open-source software which enables patternmakers and tailors around the world to participate in the digital economy. Currently, we have over 20,000 users worldwide. We need funds to refactor our current code, re-architect the translations, and create educational material for Arabic, Hindu, Thai, Vietnamese, and Chinese.

Most fashion design tools are expensive, proprietary, and inaccessible by most patternmakers and tailors. Prior to our software, the only choice for the majority of patternmakers around the globe was to create patterns on kraft paper and mail these to their clients, even when their clients are large corporations. We have received emails from users in Ghana, Fiji, Khazakstan, Sicily, and other countries stating how our software has helped them not only save their family business but to also grow it. The fashion business depends upon these poorly-paid master patternmakers in third-world countries. We wish to help preserve this craft for future generations by making the learning of patternmaking more accessible.

As an additional note, young girls in conservative cultures such as Islam may use a computer if they are creating or designing clothing. Our software enables young girls in these communities to learn computing, geometry, and desktop math. We feel this is a wonderful thing, and while it is not our primary focus we wish to promote and support this by-product of our software. Translations and educational materials in Hindi, Arabic, and other non-western languages would be very helpful in this regard.
Programming and Dollar Needs:
We are an open-source community but unlike other open-source projects, the majority of our users are not technically or financially able to contribute back to the project. We are pursuing outside funding to give this project a final professional "polish." We can then raise funds more easily from our "more-flush" Western-based users, from the schools and universities that currently use our software in their design programs, and from large fashion corporations.

We need funds to update our translations, refactor code, and create educational materials.
Our public GitHub repository lists the refactoring issues to be addressed with this funding.
We believe that $115,000 will enable us to meet our needs within an 8-month timeframe:
* $70,000 to hire a C++ consulting firm in Ukraine to refactor the code
* $25,000 to create English-based educational materials and online help
* $20,000 to translate our software and the new educational materials and online help
